Description

Smoky Masala Chai is a bold and aromatic tea that combines smoky black tea with fragrant spices like cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, and black pepper. With a touch of milk and brown sugar, this warming beverage is perfect for chilly days, cozy afternoons, or evening relaxation. Easy to prepare and fully customizable, Smoky Masala Chai delivers a comforting balance of smoky, spicy, and sweet flavors that delight both the senses and the soul.

Ingredients

2 cups water

2 tsp loose-leaf smoky black tea, or 2 tea bags (e.g., Lapsang Souchong or Black Cask Bourbon Tea)

1 cup milk (dairy or non-dairy)

45 black peppercorns

3 whole cloves

3 green cardamom pods, slightly crushed

1 cinnamon stick

12 tablespoons brown sugar (adjust to taste)

1 star anise (optional)

Instructions

  1. Simmer the Spices:
In a small pot, bring the water to a boil. Add black peppercorns, cloves, cardamom pods, cinnamon stick, and star anise (if using). Simmer for 5 minutes to release their flavors.
  2. Steep the Tea:
Add the smoky black tea to the pot and steep for 3–4 minutes, adjusting for desired strength.
  3. Add Milk and Sweetener:
Stir in milk and brown sugar. Simmer gently on low heat for 3–4 minutes, stirring occasionally to blend flavors.
  4. Strain and Serve:
Remove from heat and strain the tea into mugs to remove spices and tea leaves. Serve hot.
