Ingredients
For the Meat Mixture:
3 lbs lean ground beef
3 large eggs
1 ounce envelope instant onion soup mix
1½ cups dry breadcrumbs
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon black pepper
1 tablespoon garlic powder
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
For the Gravy (Optional):
4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
4 cups beef broth
Instructions
- Prepare the Meat Mixture: In a large bowl, beat the eggs. Add the onion soup mix, breadcrumbs, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix until well combined.
- Form the Patties: Add the ground beef to the mixture and gently combine using your hands until just mixed—avoid overmixing. Shape into oval patties, about 1 inch thick.
- Cook the Patties: Heat a skillet over medium heat and add oil if necessary. Cook the patties for 4–5 minutes on each side until browned and cooked through. Remove and set aside.
- Make the Gravy (Optional): In the same skillet, add flour to the drippings and stir to form a roux. Gradually add beef broth, stirring constantly, until thickened. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Combine and Serve: Return the patties to the skillet with the gravy, simmering for an additional 5 minutes. Serve hot over mashed potatoes or egg noodles.
Notes
- For a mushroom gravy, sauté sliced mushrooms and onions before adding flour for the gravy.
- For a spicy version, add a teaspoon of hot sauce or cayenne pepper to the meat mixture.
- To make it gluten-free, swap breadcrumbs with gluten-free alternatives.
