Description

Salisbury Steak is a classic American comfort food that combines juicy beef patties with a rich, savory mushroom gravy. This easy-to-make dish is perfect for a nostalgic, hearty meal that’s sure to please the whole family. Serve it over mashed potatoes or egg noodles for a complete, satisfying dinner.

Ingredients

For the Meat Mixture:

3 lbs lean ground beef

3 large eggs

1 ounce envelope instant onion soup mix

1½ cups dry breadcrumbs

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon black pepper

1 tablespoon garlic powder

2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

For the Gravy (Optional):

4 tablespoons all-purpose flour

4 cups beef broth

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Meat Mixture: In a large bowl, beat the eggs. Add the onion soup mix, breadcrumbs, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix until well combined.
  2. Form the Patties: Add the ground beef to the mixture and gently combine using your hands until just mixed—avoid overmixing. Shape into oval patties, about 1 inch thick.
  3. Cook the Patties: Heat a skillet over medium heat and add oil if necessary. Cook the patties for 4–5 minutes on each side until browned and cooked through. Remove and set aside.
  4. Make the Gravy (Optional): In the same skillet, add flour to the drippings and stir to form a roux. Gradually add beef broth, stirring constantly, until thickened. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Combine and Serve: Return the patties to the skillet with the gravy, simmering for an additional 5 minutes. Serve hot over mashed potatoes or egg noodles.

Notes

  • For a mushroom gravy, sauté sliced mushrooms and onions before adding flour for the gravy.
  • For a spicy version, add a teaspoon of hot sauce or cayenne pepper to the meat mixture.
  • To make it gluten-free, swap breadcrumbs with gluten-free alternatives.
