Description

Philly Cheese Steak Sloppy Joes are the ultimate comfort food mashup—juicy ground beef with sautéed onions, peppers, and mushrooms simmered in a savory sauce, then folded with melty provolone and piled onto buttery toasted brioche buns. Ready in 40 minutes, these hearty sandwiches bring together the flavors of a Philly cheesesteak with the messy, nostalgic style of a Sloppy Joe. Perfect for weeknights or casual family dinners.

Ingredients

For the Meat Mixture:

1 lb ground beef (lean recommended)

1 tablespoon butter

1/2 cup onions, chopped

1/2 cup bell peppers, chopped

1/2 cup mushrooms, chopped

For the Sauce:

1/2 cup beef broth

1 tablespoon cornstarch

1/4 cup ketchup

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon pepper

For the Cheese & Buns:

1 cup provolone cheese, chopped

4 brioche buns, toasted

Instructions

  1. Brown the Beef: Heat a cast-iron skillet over medium-high. Add ground beef and cook undisturbed for 5–7 minutes until browned. Stir and cook another 2–3 minutes until fully done. Remove beef from skillet.

  2. Sauté Vegetables: Reduce heat to medium, melt butter, then add onions, peppers, and mushrooms. Cook 1–2 minutes without stirring, then stir and cook 3–4 minutes until softened and golden.

  3. Make the Sauce: Return beef to skillet. Whisk cornstarch into beef broth, then add it to the skillet along with ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Simmer 3–5 minutes until slightly thickened.

  4. Add Cheese: Turn off heat. Stir in chopped provolone cheese until melted and creamy.

  5. Toast Buns & Serve: Toast brioche buns at 350°F for 5–7 minutes. Spoon beef mixture onto buns and serve hot.

Notes

  • Cheese Swap: Use mozzarella, cheddar, or American cheese.
  • Spicy Kick: Add hot sauce or diced jalapeños.
  • Low-Carb: Serve in lettuce wraps or over cauliflower rice.
  • Extra Meaty: Mix in diced steak tips with the ground beef.
  • Open-Faced: Spoon onto toasted bread and broil with extra cheese.
