Ingredients
2 cups whole milk
1/2 cup water
2 oz dark chocolate (70% cocoa), roughly chopped
2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
1 to 2 tablespoons sugar (to taste)
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom
A pinch of salt
1/4 teaspoon ground mastiha resin (or a few drops of mastiha extract)
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Whipped cream (optional, for topping)
Instructions
-
In a saucepan over medium-low heat, combine the milk and water. Warm gently without bringing to a boil.
-
Add the chopped dark chocolate, stirring until completely melted.
-
Whisk in the cocoa powder slowly to prevent clumps, mixing until smooth.
-
Stir in the sugar, cinnamon, cardamom, and salt until well combined.
-
Add the ground mastiha resin or extract and stir to distribute the flavor evenly.
-
Continue heating and stirring for another 2–3 minutes, but do not let it boil.
-
Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
-
Taste and adjust the sweetness if desired. Let sit for a minute to settle.
-
Pour into mugs and top with whipped cream if using.
Notes
- Use plant-based milk (almond, oat, coconut) for a dairy-free version.
- Add 1 extra ounce of chocolate for a richer consistency.
- Reduce cinnamon and cardamom for a milder spice blend.
- Chill and serve over ice for an iced version.
- Add a splash of dark rum or coffee liqueur for an adult-friendly drink.
