Description

Enjoy the flavors of Hawaii with this mouthwatering Hawaiian Shoyu Chicken recipe. Tender chicken thighs marinated in a savory-sweet sauce, baked to perfection, and garnished with green onions and sesame seeds.

Ingredients

Chicken:

  • 2 pounds chicken thighs, bone-in and skin-on

Marinade:

  • 1 cup soy sauce
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 cup rice vinegar
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)

Garnish:

  • 2 green onions, sliced
  • Sesame seeds for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Marinade: In a large bowl, whisk together soy sauce, brown sugar, water, rice vinegar, garlic, ginger, black pepper, and red pepper flakes until the sugar is dissolved.
  2. Marinate Chicken: Add chicken thighs to the marinade, ensuring they are well coated. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or up to overnight for the best flavor.
  3. Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  4. Bake Chicken: Place the marinated chicken thighs in a baking dish, pouring the marinade over the top. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through and reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C).
  5. Broil for Caramelization: For extra caramelization, switch the oven to broil for the last 5 minutes of cooking, watching closely to prevent burning.
  6. Rest and Serve: Remove the chicken from the oven and let it rest for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with sliced green onions and sesame seeds if desired.

Notes

  • For a sweeter flavor, add a tablespoon of pineapple juice to the marinade.
  • Serve the chicken over steamed rice or quinoa to soak up the delicious sauce.
