Ingredients
Donuts
- 2 cups (250 grams) all purpose flour, spooned and leveled
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup (57 grams) unsalted butter, melted and cooled
- 1 egg, room temperature
- 1/2 cup (100 grams) brown sugar, packed
- 1/2 cup (100 grams) granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup (120 mL) whole milk, room temperature
- 1/2 cup (120 grams) yogurt, room temperature (Greek or regular)
- 3/4 cup (135 grams) mini semi-sweet chocolate chips, plus extra for topping (optional)
Chocolate Frosting
- 1 cup (180 grams) semi-sweet chopped chocolate or chocolate chips
- 1/4 cup (57 grams) unsalted butter
- 1 tablespoon light corn syrup
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare: Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C) and grease a donut pan to prevent sticking.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
- Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk the melted and cooled butter, egg, brown sugar, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, milk, and yogurt until well combined.
- Make Batter: Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and whisk until just combined to form a batter. Fold in the mini chocolate chips evenly throughout the batter.
- Fill Donut Pan: Spoon or pipe the batter into the greased donut cavities, filling them about three-quarters full for best results.
- Bake Donuts: Bake for 11-12 minutes or until golden brown. Check doneness by gently pressing a donut; if it bounces back, they are ready.
- Cool Donuts: Let the donuts cool in the pan for 5 minutes before transferring them to a cooling rack to cool completely.
- Prepare Chocolate Frosting: While the donuts cool, melt the chopped chocolate, butter, and light corn syrup together in a microwave-safe bowl in 15-second increments, stirring between each, or melt over a double boiler until smooth.
- Glaze Donuts: Dip one side of each cooled donut into the melted chocolate frosting. Optionally, sprinkle extra mini chocolate chips on top for decoration.
- Store: Store the glazed donuts in an airtight container at room temperature for freshness.
Notes
- Using yogurt adds moisture for a tender, fluffy donut.
- Ensure ingredients like egg, milk, and yogurt are at room temperature to create a smooth batter.
- If you don’t have a piping bag, use a ziplock bag with a corner cut off to pipe batter into the donut molds for even filling.
- Don’t overbake to keep donuts soft and moist.
- Chocolate frosting can be reheated gently if it hardens before glazing.
- Store donuts in an airtight container to maintain freshness, best consumed within 2-3 days.
