Description

Delicious homemade chocolate chip donuts with a rich chocolate frosting. These baked donuts are soft and fluffy, filled with mini semi-sweet chocolate chips, and topped with a smooth chocolate glaze for the perfect treat.

Ingredients

Donuts

  • 2 cups (250 grams) all purpose flour, spooned and leveled
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup (57 grams) unsalted butter, melted and cooled
  • 1 egg, room temperature
  • 1/2 cup (100 grams) brown sugar, packed
  • 1/2 cup (100 grams) granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup (120 mL) whole milk, room temperature
  • 1/2 cup (120 grams) yogurt, room temperature (Greek or regular)
  • 3/4 cup (135 grams) mini semi-sweet chocolate chips, plus extra for topping (optional)

Chocolate Frosting

  • 1 cup (180 grams) semi-sweet chopped chocolate or chocolate chips
  • 1/4 cup (57 grams) unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon light corn syrup

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare: Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C) and grease a donut pan to prevent sticking.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  3. Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk the melted and cooled butter, egg, brown sugar, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, milk, and yogurt until well combined.
  4. Make Batter: Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and whisk until just combined to form a batter. Fold in the mini chocolate chips evenly throughout the batter.
  5. Fill Donut Pan: Spoon or pipe the batter into the greased donut cavities, filling them about three-quarters full for best results.
  6. Bake Donuts: Bake for 11-12 minutes or until golden brown. Check doneness by gently pressing a donut; if it bounces back, they are ready.
  7. Cool Donuts: Let the donuts cool in the pan for 5 minutes before transferring them to a cooling rack to cool completely.
  8. Prepare Chocolate Frosting: While the donuts cool, melt the chopped chocolate, butter, and light corn syrup together in a microwave-safe bowl in 15-second increments, stirring between each, or melt over a double boiler until smooth.
  9. Glaze Donuts: Dip one side of each cooled donut into the melted chocolate frosting. Optionally, sprinkle extra mini chocolate chips on top for decoration.
  10. Store: Store the glazed donuts in an airtight container at room temperature for freshness.

Notes

  • Using yogurt adds moisture for a tender, fluffy donut.
  • Ensure ingredients like egg, milk, and yogurt are at room temperature to create a smooth batter.
  • If you don’t have a piping bag, use a ziplock bag with a corner cut off to pipe batter into the donut molds for even filling.
  • Don’t overbake to keep donuts soft and moist.
  • Chocolate frosting can be reheated gently if it hardens before glazing.
  • Store donuts in an airtight container to maintain freshness, best consumed within 2-3 days.
