Description
Start your day with a delightful twist on a classic dessert! These Chocolate Cherry Overnight Oats taste just like a slice of Black Forest cake, but with all the health benefits of a nourishing breakfast. Rich in cocoa, sweet cherries, and a hint of maple syrup, this easy recipe is perfect for busy mornings when you need a delicious and energizing start.
Ingredients
½ cup rolled oats
1 tablespoon + 1 teaspoon cocoa powder
1 teaspoon chia seeds
½ cup milk (any kind, dairy or plant-based)
2 tablespoons maple syrup
3 to 4 Bing cherries, pitted and chopped (or your favorite sweet cherry variety)
Instructions
- Prepare the Base:
In a mason jar or container, combine the rolled oats, cocoa powder, chia seeds, milk, and maple syrup. Stir everything well until fully mixed and smooth. - Add the Cherries:
Chop the Bing cherries and add them to the oat mixture. Stir again to combine the cherries with the other ingredients. - Refrigerate:
Cover the jar or container and refrigerate overnight. The oats will absorb the liquid, and the chia seeds will thicken the mixture, creating a creamy, dessert-like consistency. - Serve and Enjoy:
The next morning, your oats will be ready to enjoy! For an extra treat, top with a dollop of maple yogurt (simply stir some Greek yogurt with maple syrup) and a few more chopped cherries.
Notes
- Type of Cherries: I like to use Bing cherries for that classic Black Forest cake flavor, but any variety of sweet, fresh cherries will work just as well.
- Storage: If you plan to store the oats for more than two days, prepare the chocolate cherry mixture as directed, but wait to stir in the chopped cherries until just before serving. This helps keep the cherries fresh and vibrant.
