Description

British Meat Pies are a traditional comfort food made with golden, flaky shortcrust pastry filled with savory ground beef, onion, and thyme. These classic handheld pies are ideal for cozy dinners, parties, or enjoying a slice of British culinary tradition at home.

Ingredients

2 cups shortcrust pastry

1 lb lean ground beef

1 medium onion, finely chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced

1/2 cup beef broth

1 tsp dried thyme

1 egg (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).

  2. Roll out shortcrust pastry to 1/4 inch thick. Cut circles to line pie tins and place them in the tins.

  3. Sauté onion and garlic in a skillet until soft. Add beef and cook until browned.

  4. Stir in broth and thyme. Simmer until slightly thickened. Let cool slightly.

  5. Spoon meat mixture into pastry-lined tins. Top with another pastry round and crimp edges.

  6. Brush with beaten egg.

  7. Bake for 25–30 minutes until golden brown.

  8. Cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • Use store-bought pastry for convenience.
  • Add peas or diced carrots for more texture.
  • Let filling cool before assembling to prevent soggy pastry.
  • Freeze unbaked pies for up to 2 months.
  • Serve with gravy, chutney, or mushy peas.
